Reality shows will give you Cancer….

The majority of people want to be famous in one way or another. I’ll admit it, i’m a writer, an artist, a photographer and a blogger, of course i want to be somewhat famous. Now i don’t want to be Brad Pitt famous, i definitely don’t want to be Charlie Sheen famous but i wouldn’t mind being John Grisham famous. Or as famous as some other author that actually writes good books… But here’s my question: why do we like famous people? And why does it take so little to be famous these days? Here’s a list of reality shows. What i did was take a list of every reality show that’s aired during the last two decades ( see the full list HERE ) and subtracted any reality show that involves skill, talent or a physical competition. I then subtracted any show that involved a celebrity, even B & C listers but left any show where the stars weren’t celebrities before the show aired. Here’s what i came up with.

• The Real Housewives of Atlanta

• The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills

• The Real Housewives of D.C.

• The Real Housewives of New Jersey

• The Real Housewives of New York City

• The Real Housewives of Orange County

• The Real World

• Sister Wives

• Teen Mom

• Kourtney and Khloe Take Miami

• Kourtney and Kim Take New York

• Keeping Up with the Kardashians

• The Bachelor

• The Bachelorette

• The Hills

• Jon & Kate Plus 8

• Laguna Beach

• Paradise Hotel

• Ruby

• Tool Academy

• The Girls Next Door

• The Bad Girls Club

• 19 Kids & Counting

• Bridalplasty

• Bridezillas

What do all of these shows i’ve listed have in common? Well, not a single solitary person on any of these shows has any type of talent whatsoever. They don’t act, sing, dance or model. They aren’t cops, firefighters, doctors, fisherman, truckers, loggers or even cooks or bakery owners. They don’t compete for prizes, don’t complete any physical tasks or ever have to worry about being voted off, kicked off or risking their lives. They are simply given shows so we can watch them be lazy, spoiled, mouthy, rude, backstabbing, slutty, greedy, ungrateful, preening A**holes. And we watch them.

Now i’m sure everyone that watches these shows has an excuse. I’ve never really ever heard anyone proudly admit to watching them, but they will claim to “catch it once in a while” or “i only watch it because my wife has it on” and there’s always ” i just caught it once or twice to see how bad it is”. And you know what? i’m just as guilty as everyone else, i’ve actually watched three of the shows on my list. So why do we do it? we can’t possibly like these people, we can’t watch it just because it makes us feel better about our own lives, because if it takes that level of dysfunction to make you feel good, you have some issues you may want to turn of the tv and go get addressed by a professional. I’m actually curious and i’d like to know people’s thoughts. Here’s my reasons:

The Real World: Who hasn’t watched at least one season. I’m taking a pass on this one.

Tool Academy: Watched one episode, no joke, because the remote was across the room and i was too lazy to get up and get it

Kardashians: Watched an episode once because it was on after The Soup, and let’s be honest, Kim is kinda hot till she opens her mouth.

So there’s my Shame. Now i will openly admit to watching Cooking Shows, The Amazing Race and the first three seasons of American Idol, but i have to argue that those shows involve some degree of talent and don’t pander to nearly as low a denominator as the ones listed above. But maybe that’s just my justification of watching trash instead of picking up a book.

So let’s hear it, which of these shows do you watch and Why?

Thanks Amy….

  1. I tend to believe the reason people watch those kinds of television shows is actually that, watching others like them (people with no special talent who don’t do anything extraordinary in life) allows them not to actually see their own life, live their own life, and evaluate their own life. It becomes a drug, heroin in a box with wires and lights, people don’t have to live their mundane lives – others do it for them.
